Franchise Operations: Payroll Features Every Business Needs (2026)
Franchises need payroll configured for joint employer liability, multi-entity payroll and franchisor reporting requirements, pay codes that general-purpose software leaves to the customer to build. BEG runs franchise payroll for $45 per employee per month inside the payroll software you already use, all-inclusive, live in 3 to 5 business days.

Pay codes a franchise cannot run without
Franchises pay location managers and crew members on different bases, and the payroll system has to hold every one of them as its own pay code with the right tax and overtime treatment: joint employer liability, multi-entity payroll, franchisor reporting requirements and high turnover. A generic setup collapses these into hourly and salary, and the errors show up in the regular rate, in year-end forms and in the first wage claim.
The Department of Labor's FLSA joint employer regulation at 29 CFR Part 791 is currently marked Reserved on the eCFR, with the last change dated October 5, 2021 when the 2020 joint employer rule was rescinded. There has been no DOL joint employer regulation in force since then.
On April 23, 2026 the Department of Labor published a proposed rule to restore joint employer regulations to 29 CFR Part 791, with comments due June 22, 2026. The preamble states that neither courts nor the Department have applied the FLSA to extend joint employer status to all general contractors and franchisors.
Tax handling specific to franchises
Food and beverage employers can claim a general business credit on Form 8846 equal to the 7.65% employer share of Social Security and Medicare taxes paid on employee tips, excluding tips used to bring wages up to the $7.25 per hour federal minimum wage. Distributed service charges are wages, not tips, and are excluded from the credit.
What is configured before the first run
At implementation every pay structure above is built as a code with its own taxability, its own overtime treatment and its own W-2 mapping, and the exemption status of location managers and crew members is documented against the rule that supports it. That is the difference between software with the features and a payroll that uses them correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you protect me from joint employer liability with the franchisor?
Using a third-party payroll provider that processes payroll independently from the franchisor's systems helps establish operational separation. We document that payroll decisions are made at the franchisee level.
Can you handle payroll for multiple franchise units?
Yes. Multi-unit franchisees run all locations on a single account with individual cost centers per unit and unit-level labor cost reporting.
How do you handle different minimum wage rates across states?
Each location is set up with the applicable state and local minimum wage. Our compliance calendar tracks minimum wage changes and flags upcoming rate increases.
What does BEG charge for franchise payroll?
Franchise payroll runs at $45 per employee per month. For a 5-unit franchisee with 50 total employees, that is $2,250 per month covering all locations, tax filing, and year-end W-2s.
What does managed payroll cost for a franchise?
$45 per employee per month, all-inclusive, inside the payroll software you already use, with no monthly minimum. Joint employer liability, multi-entity payroll and franchisor reporting requirements are configured at setup, not billed as add-ons.
